Beauty
I haven’t done a post like this since 2021 and since many of the products I use have changed since then, I thought I’d do an updated post. Here are the products that I’m currently using that are really working for me.
My last unsponsored Merit Beauty review got the attention of the folks over at Merit and they kindly gifted me with the following items for review. However I was not paid for this post and as usual all opinions are my own.
I have been a long time fan of the Augustinus Bader Rich cream and have tried a bunch of items from the brand because of that (see my all my Augustinus Bader reviews here). And even though their prices are exorbitant I’m always intrigued by their new products and want to give them a try. The Eye Cream and The Eyebrow and Lash Enhancing Serum were the next on my must-try list, so what did I think of them?
As some of you guys know I’ve been dealing with some substantial hair loss in the last several years. So I was very excited when Vegamour reached out and asked if I wanted to try a couple of their products for review. All items reviewed here have been generously gifted by the brand but of course all opinions here are my own and I was not paid for this review.
I wasn’t really going to write a full review about this Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm since I mentioned it in my monthly recap. But I was complimented the other day by a worker at BlueMercury on how great my skin looked. And since I never (NEVER) get complimented on my skin, I have to chalk it up to how good this product is.
At the end of every year I find myself restocking on my favorite Merit mascara and sometimes lip product (both their Signature Lip and Shade Slick) during their end of year sale (my first review of Merit here). Well after last year’s Merit Beauty review some people had mentioned trying out their Complexion stick. Fast forward a year and I decided to give it a try too along with their recommended brush and the Bronze Balm.
As I noted above, I was paid a small amount to write this review of Viori Shampoo and Conditioner bars. I so very rarely get paid to do this work so I want to say a special thank you to Chase and the folks at Viori who recognize my efforts and paid me for my time. That being said, I will try to be as unbiased as possible when writing this review. But lucky for me, these shampoo and conditioner bars are pretty good!
Since I’m always on the search for a good reef-safe sunscreen (because that’s important!), when the nice folks at kinfield asked if I wanted try out some of their products for review, I jumped on the chance to try their products.
I’ve mentioned it in the past here on the blog but I am unfortunately suffering from thinning hair. And this isn’t just some postpartum hair loss since I had my baby four years ago 😆. No, I’m pretty sure this is a genetic predicament considering my grandmother on my father’s side, my father, and my mother all had/have thinning hair. I try not to be too self-conscious about it because this is just my lot in life and how I was made (or rather how my scalp was made). But that doesn’t mean I won’t try to fight the good fight of the receding hair line.
When I turned 40 I talked about my red led wand and as much as I love that (and still use it as part of my skin care routine), I can’t get over the impact from this gifted red led therapy mask from CurrentBody.
As I celebrated my 40th birthday yesterday and as my friends and I contemplated turning forty this year, I find myself not fearing this milestone. Rather I look forward to what the next decade will bring. I guess because I’ve already reached menopause (thanks to my hysterectomy several years ago) I’m not so afraid of aging. I’m already confronted daily with white hair, more wrinkles, and thinning hair. There’s nothing to fear about aging, and I prefer to just deal with it as it comes.
Last month I said that the Augustinus Bader Soothing Cream was one of my worst purchases of 2022, but I have to say the Augustinus Bader Face Oil was one of my best. I never thought I would be a face oil kind of gal because I’ve grown up with oily skin and acne. I’ve been trying to remove oil from my face all my life. But now that I’m close to 40 (like a month away), I find that the AB Face oil is just what I need for dry California winters.
I can’t believe I haven’t done a Merit Beauty Review considering I’ve been gifted a couple of their items, and loved it so much that I purchased a couple more myself. I guess since Merit’s PR people are so chill (they only asked for one Instagram post and Sephora review) I never thought to put time into writing a blog post. Buuuuut since their stuff is so good that I’m repurchasing my favorite items I figured I might as well write this review.
Though my days of Augustinus Bader credit are over (they restructured their referral credit program earlier this year), I was still able to try two more of their products with some leftover credit: The Scalp Treatment and The Essence. Here’s what I thought of them:
I got the Augustinus Bader Ultimate Soothing Cream back when I was still getting credit from the AB website (but sadly that is not the case anymore), or else I wouldn’t normally splash out on a $265 jar of cream just to try it. But lucky for you guys I nabbed this right before they shut off my credit tap from referrals so I can give you my honest opinion of the cream.
You might already know I’m a long time fan of the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream and Lip Balm, so when I had some extra AB credit from joining and recommending their online club I decided to try out their Hand Treatment and Shampoo. So here’s a quick review of what I think of each.
So I know I already do a “Most Worn” list at the end of each year, but I also like doing my “top 10 favorite things I’ve blogged about (ever)” list at the end of each year since I blog about a lot of things other than clothes. Also this is a more subjective list since it’s my personal favorites. So yes there’s some overlap (because obviously if an item of clothing is a favorite, it’ll get worn a lot), but here are some of my other favorite items I’ve blogged about. And for reference, here are my top 10 favorite things I’ve blogged about in 2020, 2019, and 2018 (also a lot of overlap between the lists over the years).
As I mentioned in a past post, I rarely accept gifts from skincare or makeup brands because my skin is so finicky. I’ve had decades of acne (and sadly still have highly cloggable pores, though I wouldn’t say I have acne now in my late 30’s). But I also have highly sensitive skin that easily turns red or gets a rash. So I tend to stick with the same skin regimen until a product is discontinued and I have to find a replacement. I recently wrote this post about my current skincare and makeup routine. Anyway I decided to try out Nuori after seeing it recommended by one of my favorite Instagram people, Therese.
I haven’t done one of these posts in awhile so I thought I would do a little round-up of all my favorite products for those of you interested. Now I’m no beauty guru and my skin is super finicky (I’ve talked about my acne and sensitivity issues in the past). And of course everyone’s skin is different so please take my opinions with a grain of salt!
As I mentioned in my What I Didn’t Buy in July post, one of the things I did buy was this Tangie Shampoo Bar from a farmer’s market in LA. I had some very expired-smelling travel shampoo and decided that I needed something else. So I was lucky to find these Tangie Shampoo Bars at the Waste-less shop stand. I was very skeptical at first of shampoo in the form of a bar soap but I was desperate enough to give it a shot and I am soooooo glad that I did. My life is changed.
Thanks to you guys who requested a 20% off referral link for your first Augustinus Bader Club order, I was able to earn enough credit to get the AB Body Cream for $5. And since I decided to make a replenishment order for the cream I got the travel size AB Body Lotion for free. These two AB products (but especially the body cream) have been on my radar for awhile but I couldn’t quite justify spending $165 for a body product.
I really love the U Beauty Resurfacing Compound (I’ve repurchased it 4 times and counting). You can read why I love it so much in my U Beauty Resurfacing Compound review here. So I had fairly high expectations for the next product that U Beauty produced, their Super Smart Hydrator. And I really wanted to like it (and believe me I did because it’s more affordable than my current favorite moisturizer, the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream). But unfortunately it didn’t work out for me at all.
Let me just say that having grown up in Hawaii, I rarely used lip balm. There was no such thing as chapped lips in my childhood, unless we went to the US mainland. So I’m not really experienced with lip balms and I was never a chapstick addict. I’ve tried various lip balms since moving to California (20 years ago lol) and thus far I have never found one that I loved. I basically went from chapstick to a free Sephora sample or another when I needed it. But now my search is over because I can definitely say that the AB lip balm is The One.
Have you guys heard of LED light therapy for your skin? Well I was once an early adopter of these at-home LED light tools, and I had an early version of an LED wand like this LightStim for acne. But I never could keep it up because it required doing it in front of a mirror and moving the wand around to various spots on the face (because I’ve always had a lot of spots lol). But Jennifer Fisher recommended one of these full face LED Light Therapy Face Masks because it does your whole face in one sitting, and I knew I wanted to try one out. I decided to go with this one since it has great reviews on Amazon (4.3 stars out of 1700+ reviews). And you guys I was not disappointed.
The review for these Touchland Hand Sanitizers has been sitting in my drafts folder for over a year now since I got them in December 2019 to give as gifts for Christmas. Little did I know that a pandemic and subsequent hand sanitizer shortage would be just around the corner. Luckily I kept a few for myself and didn’t give away all of my 6-pack set and thus had some hand sanitizer when I really needed it. But now that hand sanitizer production is in overdrive and you can purchase it everywhere, would I recommend these fancy spray hand sanitizers?
I first heard about U Beauty (a women-owned, POC brand) through Jennifer Fisher’s Instagram, though I’ve known about Tina since her BagSnob days (one of the OG bag blogs). I’ve trusted JF before when she led me to Augustinus Bader (I talk about that in my Augustinus Bader Rich Cream review), so I thought I’d take a chance with this U Beauty Resurfacing Compound on her recommendation.
This has become a yearly tradition, where I sum up my top 10 favorite things I’ve blogged about (see 2019 here and 2018 here). And it’s not just what I blogged about for the year but rather my favorites from the sum total of my memory. And every year there are some things that stay the same and then there are new additions to the list.
I heard of the Dr. Barbara Sturm serums awhile back now and finally bit the bullet to try it during one of Sephora’s year end sales last year. Yep, I bought this Flight Essentials kit over 5 months ago (lol when taking a flight was a given—ahh how the world has changed since then). Anyway I decided on this kit because it had all the things I wanted to try: The Face Cream Rich (so I could compare it to my all-time favorite, and fellow German-made product, the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream) and the Super Anti-Aging Serum (which I’ve seen heralded on so many Insta accounts). So how does the Dr. Barbara Sturm products measure up?
As I mentioned in my December What I Bought post, I decided to try out this Kosas Tinted Face Oil because I was looking for a lighter colored foundation for the winter time (I usually use the Suntegrity 5-in-1 tinted sunscreen for the summer). I read about Kosas, a clean beauty line on several blogs and definitely wanted to try it out because of the rave reviews. Well I’m just going to let you know it did not work for me at all.

About Me
Hello! My name is Elaine and this is my small corner of the internet where I share my life, my style (consisting mostly of slow fashion, secondhand items, and ethical brands), and anything else that I'm interested in. Almost all reviews here are unsponsored and unbiased (or at least I try to be). I hope you find something useful here and thanks for reading!
I’m not sure where I first heard of Cocokind but it’s probably Instagram since I feel like they’ve been marketing on social media pretty heavily. So I wanted to see for myself what all the hype was about. Here’s what I thought about some of their products:
