Weekend Update/Ramblings

Hi guys! Wow it’s been awhile since my last weekend update post. I guess when life is smooth sailing I’m less likely to vent my feelings here on these weekend posts. In a sense, life is a little more “boring” but I’m so grateful for it. Grateful that we’re all healthy.

Anyway, closet-wise I’ve been a little bit of a runaway train lately. I think now that I finally feel like I’ve got my body back, I’m more excited about clothes these days. If you follow my Insta, you know I’ve been on a bit of a secondhand Ulla Johnson buying spree. It started with one top from ebay, followed by two sweaters, a jumpsuit and shoes from the RealReal (TRR). I’m returning one sweater, the jumpsuit and shoes because I realize I’m definitely buying too much. But I’m just so in love with the girly silhouettes and the quirkiness of her clothes. I feel like it helps spice up my mostly basic wardrobe. I’ll be writing a review of all the UJ things I’ve tried in the near future. But still, I need to go back to my more mindful consumption ways because even though I’m buying used, I’m not buying consciously. I realize I also need to break my TRR habit.

And you probably don’t want to be hearing this on a style blog, but I’ve been following the coronavirus news like a hawk lately. It’s the combo of being a public health/epidemiology grad and the fact that I have a baby with a slight cold that has made me hyper aware of this pandemic. My mom, who was planning to come to Cali in March has postponed her trip because of it (she’s of the camp better safe than sorry). I’m glad the US limited air travel to/from China when they did. At first I was thinking that was quite extreme but now I see that it was the right thing to do because this virus’ infectivity is quite high. Is this the next big outbreak since the 1918 flu pandemic?

Leah talks about why ebay is still her favorite thrift site here. I’m in total agreement and find that when buying, eBay tends to be the cheaper option and when selling, it has the least fees.

Jamie spends some time thinking about her museum pieces here. I definitely have some of those including my bags, vintage Chanel blazers, and some shoes. But I also have other sentimental pieces that I can’t get rid of like my 7th grade track jacket with my name embroidered on it, my 9th grade black pants from Japan (my first adult-like pair of pants) that I will probably never fit into again, and my rag & bone military blazer that was my first expensive piece of clothing I purchased new. I think it’s ok to have a handful of these sentimental pieces as long as it doesn’t get out of control.

What I Bought in January

I bought some of these things in December but since I purchased them after my “What I Bought in December” post they are appearing here. Also you’ll notice I added a couple new sections. One is called “What I Returned”. I’m going to try to hold myself accountable for wasted shipping. As I mentioned in my New Year’s post, I plan to pay a carbon tax at the end of the year. I know it’s better not to ship things back and forth (which I’ll also try to do less), but the least I can do is pay a carbon tax that’ll fund ways to reduce carbon overall. Another new section I’ve added is called “What I’m Selling/Sold”. Like I said before, I’m going to try to find a way to support my family with what I love doing (writing this blog). So I’m going to renew my efforts over on the Closet Sale page. I’ll be selling some of my beloved items along with other items I’ve reviewed. Any items that were gifts by the brand is disclosed. In the past I’ve sold my stuff through ebay, but I wanted to give you guys first dibs (and thanks for supporting me again through my closet sale lol)!

What I Bought

Secondhand Frame Jeans and Veronica Beard Tee from the RealReal: In December, I purchased the exact same pair of my favorite jeans from Frame as a form of insurance (review of it coming soo). I loooove my old pair so much and it’s beginning to show. Plus it was only $25 on TRR! I added the Veronica Beard tee because I’ve been curious of the brand but so far I’m not particularly impressed.

Wunderkin Hair Bows (for Emi): We got some of these handmade bows from a friend for Christmas. And they were so cute I went and bought more. These bows have a lifetime guarantee (they’ll fix ones that get undone). Also I’m happy to support a woman-made, USA-made small business.

What I Was Gifted

Everlane Perform Leggings: I’ll go into it in my review but let’s just say I might have been a tad too optimistic when I asked for a size small in these…because I’m not. I purchased a pair in medium ankle length myself (with referral credit so thank you again and always for your support of this blog).

What I Returned

Cuyana Recycled Cashmere sweater: I did like the sweater but I also had a similar one from Everlane (my fave: the waffle cashmere crew) and I don’t need two. Better to make do with what I have than buy new, right? I do plan to do a full review of this in a later post.

Everlane Cheeky Jeans: Even though I ordered these in the shorter ankle length, the fit through the butt and hips were weird. I find that I don’t really fit into Everlane jeans and I think I’m going to either stick with my current collection of 4 jeans, or purchase them in person from a thrift store. Also I’m not planning on reviewing these jeans so let me know if you have any questions about them here.

Janessa Leone wool hat from the RealReal (their current selection here): Wore it in this review here, but decided not to keep it because it was a tad too small. Also not doing a review on this.

Louis Vuitton Pallas from Fashionphile: featured it in my Insta but in the end I decided not to keep it because I didn’t love love it right away (not planning a review of this). Plus I just don’t think I’m a monogram kind of bag lady.

I have a Frame denim review coming up, but I only wear Frame jeans lately. And this Le High Straight is my current favorite. I have it in a medium blue color, but this black pair is simple yet chic.

And just to add some color to this line-up, this pink 100% silk sleeveless top is the perfect girly top for spring. I might get this once my credit from selling comes through (and as long as no one beats me to the punch, but if you do I understand—it’s a great deal lol).

Band of Outsiders Dress ($40 with code REAL)

I never could afford Band of Outsiders when they were still around (this brand is no longer producing clothes, at least not under the original team). But I love stalking TRR for their old pieces. This 100% silk dress is the perfect Cali summer dress.

PACT Review: Sweater Cardigan and Long Sweater Coat

I apologize for this very delayed review of 2 PACT sweaters I purchased in November. Some sizes for these sweaters are now sold out, but since a reader had asked for a review, here it is! The first item I bought was this Long Sweater Coat in black in S/M. It’s 100% organic cotton and feels super soft and smooth. The weave is quite tight so I don’t have to worry too much about it stretching, sagging, or snagging. It’s a tad cold for a cotton cardigan, but I look forward to styling this with different outfits in the spring.

The second sweater I purchased was this sweater cardigan below. I wanted to try the rust color that they call Cinnamon Heather, but at the time they only had a L/XL. Since this was during the time I still had fibroids, I thought the bigger size would be fine to accomodate my pregnant-looking belly. Well it turned out that L/XL was much too large so I never really wore it. I also didn’t like that this sweater is made up of 20% wool, which made it itchy. So I decided to give this sweater to a friend. Anyways let me know if you have any questions about these sweater or PACT in general. A Thank You Letter To Everlane

{Note: I wrote this before the Vice article came out and once it did I was tempted to not publish this. However, I decided to continue my support of Everlane because let’s be honest no one is perfect. Yes actions by management were a mistake, but the CX team did the right thing to unionize. Now they’ll definitely be heard and Everlane will have to work with them to come to an agreement. It’s hard trying to be an ethical company in a capitalistic society, and even though brands like Elizabeth Suzann do it well not everyone can afford them. And in the end I can’t just “cancel” a brand that has helped my blog grow in the beginning. I will continue to hope that they work to be a better brand in all aspects of their business. Leah also addressed this in her post here and I think she did a really great job.}

I’ve loved you Everlane from the very beginning (well not your beginning but my beginning of this blog). You were one of the first brands I reviewed and one of the very few that have endured. And that’s because I truly believe you make great products at reasonable prices, and you are always trying your best to be better. You’re open to feedback, you listen to your customers, and you try to do your best by them. So as I wind down Temporary Housewifey (don’t worry all my old Everlane review posts will still be available under my new blog name once I figure out how to migrate everything), I wanted to write a little thank you letter to you. Victoria Beckham Beauty x Augustinus Bader Primer Review (aka the Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer) {Updated May 2021}

You know how much I love my Augustinus Bader Rich Cream (reviewed here) so I was super excited to try the Victoria Beckham Beauty x Augustinus Bader primer (also known as the Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer). I was formally using the Augustinus Bader Cream in the mornings before makeup, and it worked alright as long as I let the moisturizer absorb completely. And then I would also use the Benefit POREfessional face primer, which I like for not breaking me out and also giving me a smoother surface for makeup application. So I thought wouldn’t it be great if I could replace those two products with this one? Also the Benefit primer has silicone in it which I’m trying to get away from.

Well, that would have been nice but unfortunately it isn’t quite that perfect. First off, it’s a great light moisturizing cream. I have acne-prone skin and I love that it doesn’t break me out. It moisturizes well enough, even in the winter. But I don’t see any transformative effects, though granted I’ve only been using it for about a month. I also am still using my AB Rich cream at night so I can’t really tell the effects of this moisturizing primer alone. I guess I’m a little meh about this priming moisturizer because it’s doesn’t really act a primer on its own. I still find myself using my Benefit primer over this one to get a really smooth starting canvas for makeup.

I do however like the bottle that this moisturizer comes in. It’s actually much better and feels way more luxe that the bulky plastic bottle the Augustinus Bader creams come in. The nozzle of the bottle is made from metal (aluminum I think?) and it dispenses really well. VB Beauty does make an effort in making their products sustainable and it shows with their packaging, from the bottle to the shipping materials. It was the first time I’ve received a package from a beauty company with non-plastic materials. Even the “dust bag” the item comes in reminds me of Celine bag dust bags.

Anyway I’m not sure if I would repurchase this item. But we’ll see how long this one bottle lasts. If it lasts longer and works just as well as the AB regular cream I might look into repurchasing this over the AB cream. I’m also interested to see how this primer will work with my makeup in the summer when my makeup tends to melt off more. But I’ll be sure to update this review answering all these questions in the future!

{May 2021 Update: So it’s been about a year and a half and I just finished this primer (I think I got the 30ml version). Granted, it was during a pandemic so I rarely wore makeup and thus haven’t touched this primer ffor most of the year. I think if I were to use this daily, I would be out in 6 months or so. Anyway now that I’ve finished it, would I repurchase? For me right now it’s a yes. I haven’t found any other primer I like that doesn’t break me out. I’m tempted to try the golden primer version but I’m afraid it might be too dark for my rather pale skin tone (and it’s pale because I avoid the sun like the plague). Also I’ve just recently joined the Augustinus Bader Club on their website where I earn loyalty points for future discounts, in which case I can re-purchase this primer at a slight discount (depending on the points I accumulate). Then I might try the golden one as well. I purchased the two Primer set: one that is the original and one that is the golden. I’ll just say I’m still a huge fan of the original but I’m not a fan of the golden primer. I have a fairly light complexion and the golden makes me looks like I put on some bad self-tanner tbh. It doesn’t match my skin tone at all. Even under makeup, it changes my coloring a bit and I’m not a fan 🤷🏻‍♀️}

Have you guys seen The Talented Mr. Ripley? I’m a couple decades late, but I just saw it on Netflix and wow, what a cast! Young Matt Damon is so good in it! Also I love young, pre-Goop Gwenyth Paltrow and I always love Cate Blanchette. Plus the simple yet chic 90’s take on 50’s Italian styling is my vibe for this summer lol. {Also if you have the time, I thought the post that the pic came from (just follow the via link) was a great deconstruction of said style.}

Anyway how was your first full week of the new year? Pretty great I hope! I’m in my 5th week of recovery from the hysterectomy and I feel good. Can’t wait to get the all clear from my doctor to go back to the full swing of things, which includes lifting up my 24 pound 10-month old! And working out! Also because of the removal of my uterus and fibroids, I’m the lightest I’ve ever been. Though I’m quickly gaining the weight back since I haven’t altered the bad eating habits that I picked up during pregnancy (gimme all the carbs). But in the meantime I’ve gone back to enjoying clothes! It’s fun to style outfits and make an effort again. You can probably tell if you follow my Insta since I’m doing almost daily ootds now.

I’m also shopping a lot more and I have to remind myself to be mindful of my consumption. I am trying to purchase only used or slow fashion this year though I’m not making any strict resolutions. I picked up a 1997 Chanel skirt suit that I love. It needs some alterations but I hope it becomes a staple in my closet. I rarely buy expensive designer clothes (and when I do it’s always used), but I love being reminded of the beautiful quality that these kinds of clothes have. For example the jacket is sewn with multiple panels so that it comes in at the waist just right. The silk lining is perfectly done. It really is like wearing a piece of art, especially when you compare it to a similar jacket you might pick up at a fast fashion retailer. Anyway here are three ways I styled it:

If vintage Chanel suits are your thing, I recommend stalking them on the RealReal (current selection here). I’ve seen the best prices on TRR (I’ve seen some of these suit sets go for $1000+ on other sites, which is ridiculous). I was luckily able to snag this one for $325. There’s another skirt suit from the same 1997 collection here but I’d wait for the price to come down a bit. Anyway I don’t normally call my clothing purchases “investments” but I gotta say this is as close to it as it gets. I really hope that both this skirt suit and I age well together.

Ilana Kohn Review: Harry Jumpsuit

I’ve seen a lot of Ilana Kohn on the Insta-sphere so even though I wouldn’t normally try on such a wide-legged jumpsuit, when I saw this Harry Jumpsuit for a good price on the RealReal I couldn’t resist.

First a little bit about the brand Ilana Kohn: all their items are made in NYC. They are quality garments and that’s probably why a jumpsuit like this originally retails for $300+. And I’m assuming for that price they pay their garment workers a living wage (but I don’t know that for sure nor is there any info about that).

I figured if I didn’t like the jumpsuit I could easily return it but for $116 it was definitely worth a shot. And to my great surprise, I really love it. At first I thought it wouldn’t work for me since it’s so long and the indigo material is heavy (like jeans). But once I slipped it on, it was really comfortable and fit well. I got a size small and I’m 5’4”. The chest are and arm holes are perfect (I’m pretty flat chested so this jumpsuit might not work for the more buxom figure). The only thing I wasn’t too sure about was the length (especially when I see it on the model here). I want to hem it but I took two polls over on Insta story and the majority of you guys say don’t hem it. I might still hem it lol >.<

The only thing I don’t like about this jumpsuit (other than the price-eek!) is that the zipper in the back goes all the way up so it’s a tad difficult getting this on and off in a hurry. Also because of the wide legs, you gotta be extra careful when going to the bathroom so nothing touches the ground. But those are very minor things. Overall, I really love this jumpsuit (even though my husband likened it to plumber overalls lol).

It’s currently winter (in California) so I’m wearing a shirt underneath this jumpsuit. But it’ll definitely work in the summer too since it’s sleeveless and falls away from the body. So even if the material is on the thicker side, I don’t think I’ll overheat in it (but I’ll update you guys on how it is when I wear it when summer rolls around).

Unsponsored Jenni Kayne Mules Review: Are They Worth It? {Updated May 2023}

So you guys I finally did it. After talking about them for almost the whole year (actually I first talked about them in September of 2018), I just decided to finally buy the Jenni Kayne mules (even though I also recently added the St. Agni mules to my collection). Do I really need another pair of mules? No, but I’m blaming the pain meds post-surgery for this one. Or maybe it was the “I feel sorry for myself” shopping urge lol. Either way I’m glad I purchased them because I can now finally stop talking about them. And tl;dr: I’m returning them! Yep, all that energy and time spent pining for them was wasted because these shoes are not comfortable (at least for me).

My biggest issue with these mules is the quality of the leather. I got the natural oiled leather version and tbh the leather feels like cardboard. It’s super stiff without any of that stretch you expect from leather. My St. Agni mules (reviewed here) feels like a luxurious glove on your feet. This one? Not so much. The Jenni Kayne version uses elastic bands to try to get the mule to hug your feet, which is kind of a cheap solution for a pair of shoes that cost $395. Maybe the regular leather version has more stretch and feels more luxurious but since they only come in black and I already have a ton of black mules, I’m going to pass. Even Everlane’s Boss Mules feel more luxurious and hug the feet better than these Jenni Kayne ones (and for the current price of $84, the Everlane mules are a steal!). Though I should mention my absolute favorite mules are the St. Agni ones.

Also the there’s no padding on the insole of these Jenni Kayne mules so I can imagine prolonged walking in them would be uncomfortable. They do run TTS though and the 38 fit me fine.

Overall I’m very disappointed in these mules (though my wallet is rejoicing). I guess you never know how something is going to be unless you try it for yourself, and sometimes it’s worth it to just bite the bullet and buy it so you can stop pining for it. I think in general I love the idea and aesthetic of Jenni Kayne but I feel like I can build a more quality wardrobe of basics with the current ethical brands I already purchase from.

{May 2023 Update: Even though my love for my St. Agni mules are going strong, I decided to return to these Jenni Kayne mules because I really need to give my St. Agni ones a break sometimes. Plus I needed something other than a black shoe. So when I found a navy suede pair of these Jenni Kayne mules for $100, I decided to give JK another chance. And I’m glad I did because I really do like these shoes now. It probably helped that someone else already broke these in a bit so the fore foot area was a bit roomier and also much less stiff. I will say I don’t wear the JK mules when I know I’ll be walking a lot because it still pinches at the forefoot area (right where it creases) on my left foot (maybe my left foot is slightly wider?). Anyway I think for $100 they’re a great second pair of mules for me though I still probably wouldn’t pay the $395 (thought I have to say after 3 years they haven’t raise the price at least.}

Weekend Update/Ramblings

Hi y’all, it’s 2020! Wow I feel like this decade is going to be a big one! Anyway I hope you all had a wonderful and loving holiday. I tried focusing on family, friends, and love this holiday season and I have to say it was one of the best (but of course a baby will also make it special). But now I’m particularly motivated to “go for it” or as I’m calling it “reach 2020” (lol, I talk about it a little in my New Years Resolution post). I’m going to try to make this blog thing a legit thing where someday I hope to be able to live off of my writing. Or am I dreaming? Well I won’t know whether or not I can do it until I try, reach for it, and ask for things.

So my first act of “reaching” (other than to state it here) is I’m going to sell some of the items that I received as gifts. Now normally when the gift comes from a friend or family member I have no qualms about selling it, but when it comes to brand-gifted items I know I’m stepping into gray territory. So in the past I’ve either gifted them to somebody else or sold them and put the money towards a nonprofit. I still plan to do some of that, but I also feel like it’s ok for me to want to get paid for all the reviews I do. Currently I get paid in merch, and if I don’t covert that into some kind of money then I’m basically doing it for free. I do understand though that I’m reviewing these items so to just turnaround and sell them seems shady. But these are great things, it’s just that I have too much stuff! Also to remedy this, I plan to do less reviews for free (or for more stuff) and instead ask for sponsorship from key brands in the future (also part of my “reach 2020” campaign lol). But what do you guys think? Is it unethical to sell things that I received as gifts to review?

Annual New Year's Resolution Post

I’ve been writing a New Year’s Resolution post for the last couple of years but this year I think I have resolution fatigue. Or maybe it’s because my life has been so tumultuous this year, that I’m just too tired to try to tackle “me-improvements”. Also my shopping hasn’t been way out of control (though of course I’m still consuming more than what is ideal) so I’m not going to try to make closet-related resolutions.

Actually as I was typing this, there was one resolution I could think of: eat less meat. I am thoroughly convinced that eating meat (or at least large quantities of it) is bad for the environment and for my own personal health. Maybe you guys can help me and point me towards some vegan recipes you love?

Also coming this year is a blog name change (I know I know I keep talking about it). I finally got my husband onboard to be my IT help to move all my content to a new url and to change the design of the blog. So these will be the final months of blog posts under Temporary Housewifey. It’s going to be a new year and a new blog folks!

{Update 1: Okay it’s been about a week since I first wrote this and I have decided to add a couple more resolutions because c’mon it’s 2020—a new decade folks! I was inspired by Renee’s post about working for what she wanted and so I decided I’m going to be intentional and reach for what I want too. Currently I want to be able to support my family by writing this blog. I’m not exactly sure how I’ll be able to get there but I feel like I’m on the right path, and I’m going to work to make it happen. Even if it means asking for things I think are a stretch (ie sponsored posts or other brand partnerships). And another resolution I’ll be working towards is a low-waste lifestyle. I know that real change in this arena has to come from governments and businesses but I can’t stand idly by and do nothing as our earth chokes with plastic and pollution. I can never be zero-waste but I’m going to renew my efforts to get to low(er)-waste. Ok so what are some of your resolutions?}

Hi guys, I just want to say thank you all for your support on this blog or on Insta through the years. I never expected to make such great internet friends by writing about what I like on the blog here. And I’m especially grateful to you all this year. It was a super tough year for me: first year without my dad, first year with a baby, 2 moves, and 2 surgeries. It was like life was giving me whiplash. And now that I feel like I’m finally on the road to healing, I want to take the time to appreciate all of you who sent me personal emails, dm’s on instagram, and even a gift directly (thanks Henny!). I was thinking of doing another giveaway here but I decided to set-up something a little more lasting (don’t worry I have some giveaways planned for the future!). Bosch Dishwasher 500 series: Technically we purchased this in November, but I forgot to add it to last month’s list. Decided to add it now here because seriously this was one of my most expensive purchases this year (but also one of the best!).

Jenni Kayne Mules: Finally bought it after talking about it for over a year. Review coming real soon (but spoiler: it was a disappointment).

Jennifer Fisher Small Heart Charm (pictured above) and Salt Trio: I’ve been following Jennifer Fisher for awhile on Insta and I really respect her hustle but also her down-to-earthness. And she has great taste both in style and in the kitchen. She’s who I want to be when I grow up lol. So I finally splurged on a small piece of fine jewelry with my dad’s initial and her signature salts that I’ve been wanting to try.

Farmacy Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen: I finally finished the sunscreens I got from Paula’s Choice and as much as I liked them for not breaking me out, they had benzenes in them. Oxybenzene and avobenzene are hormone disrupters and coral killers (that’s why they’re banned in Hawaii). This Farmacy sunscreen is mineral based and uses zinc oxide. So far I’m really liking it because it isn’t greasy, it doesn’t break me out, and it doesn’t leave my skin chalky. Also just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can skimp on the sunscreen. UV rays can still cause damage on cloudy days (lol sorry for the mom rant).

Kosas Tinted Face Oil Foundation and Wet Lip Oil Gloss: My usual tinted sunscreen/foundation is a bit too dark during these winter months so I went looking for a new foundation. I found a couple reviews of Kosas and I was eager to try this clean beauty brand. I added the lip gloss because I had that VIB promo code from Sephora.

Bon temps tea: Since my almost-ulcer episode before my surgery I’ve stopped drinking coffee so I’ve been whittling down my tea stash. Now that I’m looking to buy more tea, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t drinking tea with microplastics or any other toxic chemical. Bon temps uses non-GMO organic corn-based tea bags that are biodegradable and their teas are all organic. And I’m not going to lie, their fun 70’s Great Gatsby-esque packaging was also a major draw lol.
