Everlane Review: The Easy Chino Shorts and Giveaway {Closed}

Everlane’s Easy Chinos (reviewed here) was one my most worn Everlane items last year and one of my most worn items overall (#13 in fact). Couple that with the fact that I no longer fit into any of my shorts from pre-pregnancy (all of which were jean shorts), and I was suuuuuuper excited when Everlane revealed their Easy Chino Shorts. I was so excited that I bought two right off the bat because I had very high hopes that they would be exactly what I needed. So what did I think? Did they live up to my hopes and dreams (lol, ok I know that’s overkill when we’re talking about shorts, but really good and affordable shorts are hard to find when you’re pear shaped).

The verdict: They’re uhhhmmaaaazing. Haha, okay well maybe that’s an overstatement, but I really am very excited about these shorts and how they fit. First a note on sizing: I ordered them in a 6 because of my post-pregnancy pooch and overall weight gain. If you’ve been a long time reader and we have similar sizing, then I think a 4 would work for you (that’s the size I wear in the regular Easy Chino pants). I probably could have fit into a 4 since I still fit into the size 4 Easy Chino pants I have now, but I wanted to have that extra bit of space around the hips and rise for these shorts. Also with long term wear and multiple washings the elastic does loosen up a bit and the material in general gets softer and relaxed (that’s why I still fit into my old size 4 pants).

I love these shorts since they’re basically the short version of the long pants I already know and love. Thus I already have a bunch of outfit combos that I know would work with these shorts. The fabric is soft and pretty wrinkle resistant. I usually just wash the pants in the machine but make sure to take them out and shake out/smooth the wrinkles before putting it in the dryer. And I love that these are more age appropriate shorts for mid-thirties-me than my short ripped jean shorts. They kind of remind me of the Elizabeth Suzann Florence shorts but a tad wider in the leg, lower in rise, made of cotton, with pockets, and with a much lower price point.

The only drawback to these shorts is that the black ones pick up and show dog hair and lint like a mofo. Oh and the inseam of these pants don’t change between sizes. It’s a constant 3.5” across all sizes so I’m not sure how well the fit will be in the larger sizes (you would think the inseam would vary with size).

Everlane Review: The Mini Form Bag

After I reviewed the regular Form Bag from Everlane (here), Everlane released the mini form bag as a special invitation only limited release. Something about them trying to make it exclusive turned me off though. So I made it a point not to give it a second glance. But when they came out with a general release of them in new colors this spring, the Mini Form Bag in Bone caught my eye. I don’t normally buy light colored leather bags because I’m careless with my purses (they’re meant to be used right?). But knowing how hardy the leather on the regular Form Bag is I decided to give it a shot. And I’m so glad that I did! This bag has turned out to be one of the best small crossbody bags I’ve ever bought.

So just like the regular Form bag, the mini has a magnetic closure at the top, which makes getting into and out of the bag super easy. When it’s open, I can see everything in there in just a glance. This works great when you have just the right amount of stuff or less. But if you overstuff it, then the magnetic closure doesn’t close (which can be kind of annoying because it gapes wide open and now strangers can easily see all that’s in there too). But for me, this just means I have to make sure I carry only the essentials (phone, wallet, keys, some lip balms, small hand cream, and my sunglasses). Also for the most part when I carry all that, I have to make sure they’re arranged in a relatively neat manner (I can’t just throw things in willy nilly). So if you like carrying a lot of stuff, this bag is definitely not for you. But in exchange for sticking with just the essentials, you get a small sleek bag that tucks easily under your arm. And this also means the load you’re carrying is always light!

Like the regular form bag the strap is made of canvas, which I know some of you don’t care for since it makes the bag look cheaper. But in terms of functionality it’s awesome since it makes carrying the bag across the body super comfortable. Plus you can adjust the strap to the exact length that you want.

Inside, there’s one small flat pocket, which I thought was pretty useless when I first got the bag. But now I stash my coupons in there (because ya know, FIRE) and it’s great because everytime I open the bag I see them. So I haven’t forgotten to use a coupon since using this bag (I used to forget all the time since I’m not in the habit of clipping coupons).

And like I mentioned up top, the Italian leather that these bags are made out of are super durable and scratch resistant. I don’t baby my bags at all so I very rarely buy a super expensive bag in a light color. But these Everlane form bags are made out of a smooth and thick leather. Also with light colored bags, you want to be careful of color transfer, but I’ve had no issues with that with this one.

Seriously, if you guys are looking for a great light colored bag for spring, this Everlane mini form bag should be a contender! I can’t wait to rock this bag with my all neutral #stickofbutter looks this spring (lol if you don’t know what I’m talking about, refer to Andrea’s post here).

Gifted Everlane Items: Where Are They Now?

So I rarely see other bloggers talk about what happens to their gifted items. I guess we are supposed to assume that each piece that we raved about when we first got it, is still an amazing workhorse in our closet. But we all know that’s not true because that’s not true about most items that enter our wardrobe (gifted or not). Also I’m sure bloggers don’t want to look a gift-horse in the mouth (I had to look that idiom up to get it right and what an interesting phrase) and burn bridges with future sponsorship/gifts. Buuuut since I’m not looking for any sponsors or gifts this year I’m going to tell it to you straight: not all the gifts I got from Everlane were a winner. Here’s a list of things I was gifted and what were the winners and losers.

Winners

Everlane Easy Chinos (reviewed here): These were easily my favorite pair of pants from Everlane and I wore them a ton. They made it to my most worn items of 2018 list as well as lowest cost per wear Everlane list. Can’t wait to wear them again post pregnancy!

Polka dot shirt dress (reviewed here): I really love this dress and the cupro material, and the only reason why I stopped wearing it was because the baby bump was making it a tad too short. But again I plan to rock this once my body shrinks back to it’s normal size.

Renew lightweight puffer (reviewed here): This was my last gifted item from Everlane and I’m glad I was able to try it out. I love how lightweight it is but still keeps me warm. I can no longer zip it up currently but that hasn’t stopped me from wearing it layered over sweaters or with a scarf.

Losers

The Academy Blazer (reviewed here): As much as I wanted to love this blazer, I think I just have to admit I’m no longer a blazer-wearing person. Also the shorter style just isn’t as on trend or as cute as the oversized one. I sold this on eBay and kept the $65 to go towards my hospital bills (I was feeling a bit poor at the time so I sold a bunch of things to go towards the hospital bill).

Short Sleeve Popover Shirt (reviewed here): As much as I liked the shirt in theory, I ended up not wearing it as much as I had hoped. I think in the end it reminded me too much of my Episcopalian school uniform (from when I was in K-5) and I never felt stylish in it. Also the collar kept getting makeup on it which is a pet peeve. Also sold it on eBay.

Mixed Bag

Day Glove Flats (reviewed here): I think I was one of the very few people that didn’t love love these flats. Even in the review I disclosed the fact that I ended up selling these (and donated the sale money) due to the fact they gave me blisters. But every time I see a pair on Insta or on a blog I get a twinge of regret and wonder if I should’ve just slapped on some bandaids and worked harder to break them in. I’m debating on repurchasing these or possibly going for the original Martiniano Glove shoes that these are “inspired by.”

Form Bag (reviewed here): This was something I boldly asked Everlane for, without them asking me if I wanted anything that month. And I was super thrilled when they said yes. But I put it in this mixed bag category here because even though I still love it (love how it looks and how I can carry it), I find that I don’t wear it as often as I thought I would. It might be because I’m still sans baby so I can get away with carrying small bags (which I rather do since they’re lighter and don’t get in the way). I’m keeping it around since it’s a great mid-size bag and am hoping it would work as a minimal diaper bag.

What I have left

And I think that’s it. I was gifted about one item per month from about March to October, so a total of 7 items. I’m extremely grateful to have had this partnership, especially when I think about all the winner items I keep wearing on repeat (or will get to wear once baby comes). Currently I’m putting a hold on the partnership since I’m trying to decrease my clothing consumption and also because I don’t want to be buying things for my pregnant body, just in case I don’t wear them once my body settles back to its “regular” shape (in whatever form that’s going to be—I’m trying to keep expectations low lol). So I might hit them up later to see if they’d be interesting in partnering again, but if not that’s okay too. I’m just grateful for the things I did receive!

Everlane Try-On: Soft Cotton Square Cardigan

I really really loved Everlane’s Soft Cotton Square Crew sweater (reviewed here) so when the black version of the crew neck sweater wasn’t available, I decided to try out the black version of their Soft Cotton Square Cardigan. It has the same soft cotton material and the same square shape so it’s bound to be just as great, right? Well…

I had originally had visions of the sweater looking like this:

I think if I was wearing skinny jeans like the instagram pic, it would be pretty cute. Or maybe one of those pairs of snug fitting high-waisted jeans. Or I think the key might be to keep it unbuttoned for a cuter look.

Let’s just say it’s not doing my prego body shape any favors. While the soft cotton crew sweater has a great drape and tends to hide my prego belly, the cardigan seems to accentuate it. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not styling it well or because my current figure is not suited to this shape but I rarely found this cardigan flattering. At first I thought it was kind of cute but with more photo evidence, I decided it was not that cute.

In the end I was undecided but did think it wasn’t that cute while pregnant. And since I didn’t want to hold on to this cardigan in the off chance it’ll look cute once I get my usual figure back, I decided to just send it back.

Everlane Review: The Boss Mules and The Boss Loafers

The Boss Mules

As soon as I saw these Everlane Boss Mules on the Coming Soon page, I knew I would be trying them out. Actually I had been eyeing them since the summer when Everlane did a sneak peak of them on their Instagram Stories. And the reason why I was so excited for these shoes is that they look a lot like Jenni Kayne’s mules (similar here). I’ve always wanted her mules but couldn’t fathom spending $395 for them. But a dupe from Everlane that’s $140? Sign me up!

When I first opened the shoe box I thought, “Wow these look like witch shoes” because they were so pointy (and fyi Jenni Kayne’s version isn’t as pointy). But somehow when you wear them, the point doesn’t look as exaggerated. And in fact, the pointiness helps lengthen the leg and I really like how they make my short legs look a tad longer.

The heel of the mule is slightly padded so it feels pretty comfy and even though I have high arches, I had no problems with achy arches even after hours of walking. The front of the shoe has a suede type of material so it keeps the shoe from sliding off your foot (and it makes walking in it easier).

As for sizing, I found that they fit TTS (I’m usually an 8 in Everlane’s shoes). The width was a tad snug but nothing terrible and the length was just right. My toes didn’t feel squeezed in this at all. On the first day I wore them around for a couple hours and it did cause a small blister at the top of the knuckle of my big toe, but only on my left side. My right foot was completely fine. So for those with wide feet I do think this does need a bit of a breaking in period. Also it being a pointy shoe, if you jam that point against anything, the leather will scuff, especially in this softer pebbly matte leather.

But due to the fact that patent leather doesn’t stretch as well as regular leather I’m going to pass on the white pair of Boss Mules (which I originally really wanted and am actually still somewhat contemplating on getting). I really love the look of these shoes and I think the white ones would look so great with my navy and khaki colored pants, but I’d probably have to work on stretching out the left side shoe. Also the white will probably get so dirty and scuffed up, especially since I’m not particularly careful with my shoes and how I walk. These are all the reasons I’m telling myself to hold off on getting another pair of Boss Mules, but we’ll see how long my resolve lasts, lol.

The Boss Loafers

Now it’s a totally different story with these Boss Loafers. I kind of had a feeling they wouldn’t work with my feet because I have sizing issues with most of Everlane’s shoes from the Santa Maria a Monte factory (I explained it all here). And like most of the shoes from that factory, I found this one to be too long though the width is just right. In the pictures above, you can see how the shoes kind of gape at the back. Of course, I don’t have these issues with the Boss Mules because those don’t have a back end. But if you’ve had success with Everlane’s editor heels/slingback, Day Glove, or any of the other shoes from the Santa Maria a Monte factory then you probably won’t have a problem with these loafers. I really do like the taupe color and wish it came in the mule style!

Everlane Review: The Form Bag {Updated September 2018}

Hi guys, so since I've been getting a lot of questions about Everlane's Form Bag I've decided to fast track this review if you are debating on whether or not to get this bag.  So as I disclaimed up top I got this as a gift from Everlane, but only after I kindly asked my contact at Everlane (this was the first time I've ever asked them for anything).  I originally wasn't on the list of influencers to get this bag for free (cuz I'm still small beans you know), but I thought why not just try asking?  And wonderful Emily at Everlane said yes and she sent it to me with next day delivery (shout out to Emily--thank you so much!).  Man I feel like I won the lottery!

And you guys, I did win the lottery because this bag is uhhhhmazing.  No really, I know bags and this is a good one!  True to its name this mid-size bag is uber functional but the build and leather quality on this is really fantastic.

So here are all the ways I love this bag:

- So this 13” height x 5” depth x 10.5” width bag fits my 13" Macbook Pro.  This is the first bag I've ever had that can isn't a tote that can fit my computer, which is awesome.  However, a Macbook with a laptop sleeve will not fit horizontally because it just barely fits with the laptop alone.  I think a larger laptop might fit vertically but then you wouldn't be able to close the top of the bag. But I'm not really afraid of leaving my laptop in there without a case since the inside of the bag is soft (it's lined by a kind of cottony felt material glued to the leather).

- I really love the adjustable fabric strap.  Yes, it might make the bag look cheaper, but when it comes to function and comfort a fabric strap can't be beat!  The fabric strap allows you to adjust the strap to the exact length that you want (as opposed to pre-determined belt holes of a leather strap).  And I prefer fabric straps when it comes to comfort since leather straps tend to be stiff and heavier than fabric ones.  But where the straps connect to the bag is leather so that helps to keep wear and tear to a minimum.

- The magnetic closing up top is super easy to open and close.  I also like to grab the bag by the pinched ends at the top, making it easy to grab.  I usually like bags with top handles as well as a shoulder strap since I can easily grab the bag by the top handles.  In this case the flattened top acts like a top handle.

- I can pile a ton of stuff inside of it.  The other day I ended up buying a bit too many snacks at World Market (I rarely go in there so when I do, I end up overdoing it lol) and since I didn't want to use a throwaway bag I just threw everything into my bag.  When it gets stuffed, the Form bag ends up acting more like a bucket bag (the top won't close but that just means you have even more space to throw stuff in).

-Inside the bag is one large flat pocket great for stashing my phone and keys.

- The corners of this bag are reinforced with stitches so it should keep wear and tear to a minimum.

On top of all the great functionality, the leather quality on this bag is really amazing.  When someone asked how it compares with my Celine smooth leather bags (like my Sangle), I would say the Everlane leather is a tad more lightweight (thinner) but also less prone to scratching.  For what you are paying ($235 for this bag), you are getting a great value (compare that to $2200 for a Celine).  And for those wondering, the bag empty weighs 1 pound 6oz, which is fairly lightweight for a midsize leather bag (the Celine Sangle weighs 2 pounds 4 oz.). 

The only thing I would caution about the design of this bag is that with time and wear, if you don't take care and moisturize the leather at the top where it bends to close via the magnets, I can see the leather wrinkling and cracking in the distant future (this is like longterm care tips).  Keeping the leather supple there will keep it from creasing too much and then cracking (I like Chamberlains Leather Milk which I reviewed here).

{Sept Update: Now that I’ve been using the bag for awhile now I just wanted let you all know that it’s wearing great. The leather on this is quite tough and I haven’t had any major scratches on it yet. The leather does soften a bit at the top and where the straps attach but nothing major. Also I usually use it to carry my 13” macbook but I get lazy and just insert it vertically because getting it in and out horizontally everyday is a pain.

Everlane Review The Linen Muscle Tank

If you've been following along with my Summer 10x10 challenge, you would have seen me pair this Everlane linen muscle tank with my Elizabeth Suzann linen Clydes for a very SF Giants fan look.  This is actually my first time wearing this tank because, well color!  It's almost too much color for my usual taste but when I first tried it on at the Everlane store I really liked it (see pics below).  I especially like how the orange (well they call it "rust" but really it's quite orange) goes with denim of different hues.  It works for both dark and light denim.  

I sized up to a medium in this because I found the small to be quite fitted.  And though the arm holes are a tad big, it doesn't really bother me.  The 100% linen is a great lightweight knit which breathes really well.  It's a tad scratchy at first but will soften with washings.  It will also stretch out a tad with washings (which I learned from my Everlane linen knit dress from awhile back), but unlike the dress I don't think this muscle tank will lose too much of its shape since there's less material overall.  I think the dress became a little potato-sack-y after awhile because the dress stretched in odd places.  The best way to keep the shape is probably to lay flat to dry instead of hanging.

What do you guys think?  Anyone else try out their linen knit items this year?  I might not wear this as often because of the color but at least I know what I'm wearing the next time I go to a SF Giants game!

Everlane Review The Form Two Strap Sandal

If there was one Everlane purchase I regret this year it would be this Form Two Strap Sandal.  I purchased the Form Sandals last year in the plum color (now on sale at Everlane), and though I wore it a lot I always thought it was on the ugly side.  So when I saw Everlane's new sandals for this summer, I impulsively purchased them thinking they would be my new leather sandal for the summer.  I especially liked the green fabric stripe on the larger band (it looked a tad Gucci-esque to me) and I loved that they added a rubber layer at the bottom so that it's grippier than last year's version.

But here's the thing, I also purchased a pair of Birkenstocks (similar) in May after swearing never to be caught dead in them...ever.  But when I was in a Nordstrom Rack in Hawaii (tagging along with some friends), I tried on a pair.  And ohhhh maaaaii they are so comfortable.  It was kind of love at first wear.  So with two new sandals in my collection, sadly these Everlane ones got neglected.  As I mentioned on Monday, I've worn my Birkenstocks so much that they made it into my top 10 most worn items (so far I've worn them 23 times since May).  On the other hand, I've only worn these Everlane sandals a grand total of 3 days (woomp woomp).

So I don't know if I can honestly recommend these Everlane sandals.  Compared to the Birkenstocks, the sole feels a lot thinner while the straps aren't nearly as comfy.  However, aesthetically, I really like the look of these sandals.  But for me, that's no longer enough (I'm firmly in the old lady camp of comfort over looks).

But if you are interested in these sandals, they are true to Everlane size (which for my slightly wide feet is a half size bigger than my normal size, ie I get a size 8 in Everlane but 7.5 in most other shoes).

Anyway since I'm not wearing these sandals and they're just sitting around in my closet, I figure someone else could get better use out of them.  Like I said, I've only worn them 3 times.  So you can find the for sale here.

Everlane Review: The Easy Chino {Updated December 2020}

So after three years of blogging about Everlane I've finally made-it made it.  For the first time ever, Everlane gave me a sheet of all the things they are releasing in June and let me choose what I wanted to review!  So y'all this is my first post with a gifted item and I'm not ashamed. And these pants, called the Easy Chino which are being released today are another reason why I love Everlane. 

I was a bit hesitant at first about ordering pants from Everlane because historically they've never worked out for me (seriously not once for the last 3 years except for maybe the Cheeky Jeans).  So I was worried that I would try them on, hate them, and then have to figure out a polite way to tell my contact at Everlane that I'm returning the pants.  Because seriously a pair of $55 pants for free is not worth the integrity of this blog that I've spent 3 years to build up.  But man oh man I got lucky because I really truly love these pants.

I was first drawn to these pants because they have the same silhouette as my all time favorite pants, Elizabeth Suzann's Clydes work pants.  Plus elastic waistbands are my jam. I got this in my usual size 4 (I have a 28" waist with 37" hips) and I would say they run true to size.  I might even be able to go down to a size 2 since I have so much give at the waist and room at the hips, but then I think the fit would be much more snug.  As it stands with the size 4, the fit is as easy as the name suggests.  The cotton fabric is soft and not overly crisp so it doesn't wrinkle like crazy (it’s 98% cotton with 2% elastane).  I wore these pants all day on Sunday and the fabric relaxed a bit but because of the waistband it doesn't really sag.  Also the shape of the pants falls away just enough so that it doesn't hug your butt.  So you don't have to worry about VPL (though I probably wouldn't wear super thick undies like my Thinx with these pants).  

As for how they compare with my Clydes?  The Easy Chino's aren't as high waisted as the Clydes and the waistband isn't as thick or as snug.  Also the Chinos are a tad on the longer side for 5'4" me, so I rolled up the bottom hems twice (I have to get my Clydes in 4 short).  I think the butt area of the Everlane Chinos are more flattering since the Clydes tend to balloon out more at the butt.  And of course the Chino material is completely different and much thinner than the linen and cotton canvas the ES uses for their Clydes.  But the Chinos make for a great cotton summer pant (since I find the gen 4 cotton canvas way too thick for the hot summer months here).  I'm just really excited to pair these pants with all my other tops and see how this ochre color goes with everything (it's first pair of ochre bottoms)!  Also the ochre color in these photos are way more orangey than in real life (sorry I tried correcting it but didn't know how to make it more brown colored).  Also I really like these pockets.  Of course they're not as big as the pockets on the Clydes but they're still pretty deep and I can fit my iPhone in it.  I love these pants so much I'm thinking of getting them in black (but that might be over-consuming Elaine talking so I'm going to sit on it for a bit and think about it).  

But I'm very happy to be able to recommend these pants that are being released today!  If you've been thinking about a pair of Clydes or something similar but don't have the budget for it, I do think these pants are an excellent dupe as easy elastic band pants!

P.S. Okay I bought the black ones too.  I know I know I need to consume less but I can't help it, I love these pants!  I'll be mindful and not get the ones in Stone because TBH I love that color too!

P.P.S. For those wondering about the rise on these, they sit at my belly button and it measures 10.5".  For comparison, my ES linen Clydes have a 12" rise.

Update: Hi guys so these pants are quickly becoming my favorite pair. I wear them constantly and have been washing them a lot, and I have started to notice a bit of fading and wear on the waistband. This is probably because I dry them on normal high heat, which is not recommended. If you want to keep your pants looking good, I would recommend hang drying (which is what I’m going to start to do to keep these pants nice). Gotta take care of our most loved clothes, right? Also I got another pair in black and they do pick up and show dog hair like crazy just fyi!

{December 2020 Update: So I’ve been wearing these pants for about two and a half years now and I still love them. They are probably my best purchase from Everlane ever. They continue to be my go-to pants (especially during this pandemic). They’ve faded a bit and the elastic has loosened a tad as well, but they work out perfectly since I’m a solid size 6 now. I’m happy to see that Everlane continues to stock these pants and have expanded the sizing and colorways (darn I wish I had snagged navy before they sold out).}

Everlane Review Linen Oversized Collarless Shirt

Ah, another season of new linen offerings and this is my third year of Everlane linen shirts.  I know, I'm like the Goldilocks of Everlane linen tops.  First there was the collarless linen square shirt 2 years ago (which I never kept because I disliked the volume of the square shape), and then there was last year's classic relaxed linen shirt (which I just sold on my Closet Sale page).  Now there's this year linen oversized collarless shirt, and like they say third time's the charm, because I love love love this shirt.  So much so that I went and bought the black version of this after wearing this white shirt one day.

But first a note on sizing: I'm usually a size 4 in Everlane tops but when I saw the words 'oversized' I went a size down because I prefer my shirts to be more fitted.  And I have to say the size 2 is perfect.  Everything is still loose around the chest and shoulders but not overly so.  I decided for the black linen version to size down even smaller to a 0 since I felt it could be even more fitted, but for the white one the 2 is small enough (any more fitted and I'm afraid you can start seeing my bra through the shirt).  I'll update this review when I get the black 0 and let you know how it fits.

But as it stands, the white in size 2 is still opaque enough that you can't see a nude bra through the material.  You can kind of see the outline of my black pants in the picture below but that's no biggie.  

So what makes this linen shirt so perfect for me is the collarless-ness.  I sold last year's version of the linen shirt (with a collar) as well as my two Grana linen shirts with collars because I kept getting make-up on the white linen collars and I hated that.  This collarless version is awesome since I don't get any makeup on it but it still has the easiness of a white linen button-down.  It's a combo of Everlane's linen shirt from 2 years ago (collarless, square) and their shirt from last year (collared, not-square).

Here I am trying the half-tuck look.  I don't think I'm a fan or can quite pull it off, lol.  What do you think?

Anyway I'm thrilled with Everlane's newest iteration of the linen shirt.  As usual Everlane's linen is good (though not as thick as Elizabeth Suzann's).  The texture is still quite soft and smooth.  Can't wait to try out the black linen version and I'll update this review once I get it.

Has anyone else tried this year's linen shirt and what did you think?

P.S. Got the black version in size 0 and I still love it.  The fit again is still good and not tight at all around the shoulders or chest.  Still love this collarless shirt and so glad I got it in both black and white!  But I think for the best proportions, just one size down from your normal Everlane size is best.

Everlane Review: The Editor Slingbacks

Ever since I saw the Paul Andrew Rhea slingbacks on Shopbop (over a year ago) I've wanted a shoe just like it (but I wasn't about to drop $500+ on a pair of shoes).  So I was super excited when Everlane previewed their Editor Slingbacks on their site, though I have to admit, it felt kind of Zara-y since Everlane's version does look a lot like the original Paul Andrew ones.  But there are only so many ways you can do a simple black slingback right?  Well I would have kept these ethical versions with no qualms if only the sizing had worked out.

But I should have learned my lesson from trying the Editor heel (reviewed here) that my usual Everlane size of 8 is too big for this style of shoe.  Or rather, the width is perfect for me (and my wide feet) but by sizing up, the length of the shoe ends up being too long, and in a slingback like this, you really do need to have the perfect size for the shoe to stay on.  But man oh man I really wanted this shoe to fit.  

Though even if the shoe had fit, they weren't that comfortable to walk around in.  The soles were pretty flat and stiff, while the slingback really didn't do much to keep the shoe on your foot (though of course having the perfect size here would have helped).  I do think the design of the Paul Andrew Rheas is much better at keeping the shoe on your feet, with the suede wings coming up around the ankle with a large elastic right at the heel.  But I guess that's what you would be paying $500 for.  

I think both the Editor heel and the Editor slingbacks would be better suited for those with narrower feet and who work in an office environment.  Since I have neither narrow feet nor work in a carpeted and air-conditioned office, these shoes are definitely not suited for me.  So back they went (and don't worry I wipe down my concrete floors before taking the pics above so the shoes are still pristine).  Also I have a new pair of pointed flats in my life that I love (Rothy's, which I'll review soon) so I'm good in the pointed flats department!

Everlane Review The Day Heel Mule

I am a huge sucker for Everlane shoes (as evidence by all my Everlane shoe reviews) and there are a lot of times I really love the look of the shoe but it fails me in terms of fit and comfort.  And this is usually because Everlane's shoes have run pretty narrow in the past.  But I'm happy to report that this is not the case for the Day Heel Mule!  In fact, I've worn these so many times since I got them that they're now the second most worn shoes in my closet this year (after my Vince Blair sneakers).

First a note on sizing: I got this in my usual Everlane shoe size of 8 (I'm usually a 7.5-8), and I found that they fit perfectly with little or no gap between my heel and where the shoe ends.  The forefront of the Day Heel Mules are a good width and so even though I have a slightly wide foot, I have no issues.  

These are made in the same factory as the regular Day Heels (in Montopoli in Val D’Arno, Italy) so the fit between those and the mules are very similar.  I really like the sizing of the shoes from this factory (as say compared to the factory where the Modern Loafers are made) because they tend to keep the width of the shoes pretty normal.  The leather of the Mules is also the same soft and beautifully supple leather as the regular Day Heels, but that also means that the shoes are prone to nicks and scratches.  I decided to go with the only leather option (in the color cognac) because I'm not a fan of suede.  So if you like the Day Heels, you'll probably like the Day Heel Mules even better (well if you like the style) since it wears pretty similar except with the mules you don't have the scrunched up leather at the Achilles tendon like the Day Heels do (I found that when I walk around in my Day Heels a lot, that part of the shoes rubs my heels and makes it a tad painful).

I included these shoes as part of my Spring 10x10, and I got to see how really versatile they are.  Even though I'm not a huge fan of the cognac color, it actually went with a lot of my outfits because I think the color is neutral enough.  The 2 inch block heels were also just enough height to help elongate the leg but still really comfortable to walk around in.  I did go shopping in them once and after a couple hours I did find that the pinkie toes on both of my feet were a bit pinched and red but I didn't get any blisters (and now that the skin there has hardened a bit, I no longer have that same problem).  And the only other issue I found is that the smooth soles can be a tad slippery so something like this would help.

I love that the shoes are a perfect match to my Celine Seau Sangle (similar here, reviewed here) in the picture above.  

Anyway if you are in the market for a good pair of leather mules, I have to say that these are a huge winner for me and definitely worth trying out.  I'm so in love with them that they may have become my favorite pair of shoes from Everlane ever and I wouldn't be surprised to see them on next year's Lowest Cost Per Wear Everlane post (this was this past year's post).

Everlane Review The Modern Utility Jacket

Back in January, when I wrote up the review for the Elizabeth Suzann Clyde Jacket, I was left searching for a good work jacket with pockets.  A reader had suggested Tradland's Chore Coat, and I was considering it but procrastinated on buying it (since I was already buying too many things).  But then I saw that Everlane was going to come out with a coat with pockets and decided to wait for their Modern Utility Jacket to be released.  And boy was I not disappointed!  It's as if Everlane read my mind (or my blog) and made the perfect work jacket for me (lol, though I know that's not possible considering the lead time it takes for production).  But really, this jacket is everything I wanted.  

First a note on sizing: I got this in my usual Everlane size of small (I'm 5'4" and usually a size 4 on top) and it fit well.  It's a tad long for my petite frame so the jacket does look better on me when it's open and unzipped.  The small is still a bit oversized and it's large enough for me to fit a sweater like Everlane's Long Sleeve Crew underneath (which I usually do pair together when it's a bit chilly).

Here are all the things I love about this jacket:

~ 4 big pockets with gussets that can fit bulky items (like a walkie tallkie) and that have snaps to keep the pocket secure.

~ The twill material is super sturdy and substantial but still lightweight.  This is exactly the kind of material I think of when I think of a "utility jacket."

~ I love that there is both a zipper option and a snap option.  I rarely like to zipper up all the way, but it's a great option.  The snaps are large, well-made and easy to use.

~ Another great option to have but that I don't use is the drawstring at the waist so that you can cinch it in for a better silhouette.  Since this is my work jacket I don't really care too much but I might try it out the next time I have the jacket closed so that I look less blocky.

~ And I love that the collar stands up but it stays away from my face and chin so that I don't get any makeup on it.

I can't think of any cons to this jacket (so far but of course will update this post if I do).  Also just to note, the color of the jacket on Everlane's website is a touch more brown than IRL.  I've worn this jacket 10 times in about 3 weeks (where 1 of those weeks was really hot so there was no need for a jacket).  I've also used this jacket in my Spring 10x10 and I love it even more every time I wear it.  This is the best LSJ (light spring jacket, term learned from Grechen) I've ever had and one of my favorite items from Everlane this year.  If I wasn't working on mindful consumption, this jacket would be something I would buy multiples of in different colors because I love it so much (but as it stands, I know I only need one so I will only buy one lol).

Everlane Review Dipped Zip Tote {Updated Feb 2018}

One of the things I let myself get from Everlane after my complete shopping fast in March, was this Everlane Dipped Zip Tote in black.  I was really in need of a new work bag (all of last year I was using a backpack, but I'm firmly in my mid-30's now and wearing a backpack everyday feels like I'm regressing).  So I was in search of a good tote.  I used to have the Mansur Gavriel one, but that was too fancy for my needs (and the leather on that scratches up like crazy so it wasn't the best option for a bag I was planning to throw around with all my stuff).  I also reviewed Everlane's pocket tote earlier this year, which I loved except for the bottom sagging out.  So when I was browsing Everlane's site and saw this dipped tote, I thought it might be exactly the one I needed (and I wasn't disappointed).

The best thing about this bag is definitely the dipped bottom.  It's the answer to the problem of a unsupported sagging bottom (lol if only there was a fix for unsupported saggy human bottoms), which was the problem with the pocket tote.  I also love the super sturdy leather straps that are wide enough that it doesn't dig into my shoulders when I'm carry my full work load (which includes a 13" macbook pro+cover and a handful of different pouches, see pic below).

At first I thought that the bag might be too narrow for my needs since the bottom of the bag is quite narrow and not stretchy, and in the beginnng when my bag was packed to capacity it did look like the top un-dipped part kind of overextended over the narrow dipped part.  But I've found that after use, it doesn't really look like that anymore (so maybe the dipped part is just super structured in the beginning).  I also love that the bag can be zipped up, which is perfect for travel.

My only real gripe with this bag is that the black undipped canvas picks up dog hair and lint like crazy and because it's black it shows.  I probably would have preferred the gray canvas with the black dipped bottom, but that was unfortunately sold out by the time I purchased.  

I've been using this bag for about two months now and it's been awesome.  I did see some reviews on the Everlane site mention that the dipped part starts to crack after heavy usage.  But I've been throwing it around and so far so good (but of course will update this review if I start to see flaws).

Everlane Fisherman Cotton Zip Pullover Review

Finally an Everlane review on something I ended up keeping and loving!  May I present Everlane's Fisherman Cotton Zip Pullover.   One thing you can always say about Everlane's sweaters is that they keep their knits pretty interesting.  Most of the time those interesting shapes don't really work too well with my body (case in point: Everlane's premium ribbed cashmere), but not this fisherman sweater.  I think for the most part it's a pretty standard mockneck sweater, except when it comes to the knit details.  I love the knit lines that extend down the arm and that extends from the mockneck.

Also the zipper adds a fun detail, and I find it useful at times too (like those times I start heating up and a mockneck is just too warm, unzip and now you can get some ventilation through the collar).  The works out perfectly for me since I dislike turtlenecks and sometimes feel constricted even with a mockneck.  Oh, but I should say there are times I find the zipper rubbing against my neck and I feel annoyed so I unzip it.

So far I've been wearing it about 2-3 times a week for the last couple weeks and there's no pilling or excessive stretching out.  Just to note I ordered this in my normal Everlane size of small (I'm usually a size 4 on top).  If you're looking for something a little more classic from Everlane, than this cotton fisherman sweater is the perfect spring time transition piece.

Everlane Review E2 Bomber Jacket {Updated October 2017}

Merry Christmas Eve Eve y'all!  I'm currently traveling in Thailand but I have a back log of reviews to get done so the review train must keep on chugging lol.  Anyway about bomber jackets: I love the look of them but am always annoyed by the over-embellishment on most of them (for example this one or this one).  So I was really excited when Everlane came out with a super plain one as part of their E2 collection.  {Speaking of the E2 collection, did anyone else purchase anything from this collection?  Personally, I found a lot of the looks hard to pull off unless you're super tall and skinny.}  Anyway so here I am wearing the E2 bomber:

What do you think?  I'm a little "eh" about it.  I don't hate it but I don't really love it either.  I think the main reason why I don't love it is because it's "lightly filled for warmth" as Everlane puts it, but it makes this jacket bulkier.  In San Jose, I don't really need too much extra warmth so I actually prefer the bomber I purchased a couple months ago that's just one layer (also the lighter jacket allows me to layer my cropped sweaters underneath).  But other than that I can't find any real fault with it.  I ordered it in a small and it fit well in the both in the sleeve length and overall length.  But I just wasn't loving it (ya know?) so I ended up returning it.  

{Update: Looks like they brought the bomber back for this year with a slight change in the pockets, but I love their new colors especially this maroon one!}

Everlane Review The Pleated Skirt

Since I unexpectedly loved Everlane's stretch ponte tube skirt, I thought I might as well see how I like their pleated skirt, which came out around the same time.  And well, if you're looking for a good pleated skirt, Everlane's version might be the one for you.

First a note on sizing, I would say this skirt runs true to size (I'm usually a size 4 and the 4 here fit me well at the waist).  The sizing is a bit forgiving since it's an elastic waistband with a button and zip closure.  Also for reference I'm 5'4" and this skirt goes just past my knees.

The fabric itself is 100% polyester and is a bit scratchy, and that's a bit unfortunate since the skirt is unlined.  But I think the material was chosen because it holds the pleats so well and seems to be somewhat resistant to wrinkles.  In the pics below I'm styling it with Everlane's cropped donegal cashmere from last year and my favorite rag & bone slides.

In the end I decided to return this skirt because of the rough material and because it reminded me of my private school uniform that I had to wear daily for 6 years (this is also the same reason I dislike Keds shoes).  Anyways you can find all my other Everlane reviews here and Everlane items here.

Everlane Stretch Ponte Tube Skirt Review

Last year I was a huge fan of Everlane's ponte collection short-sleeve dress, so when I saw that they brought it back this season as a skirt, I knew I had to at least try it out.  And I'm so glad that I did!  This ponte is the perfect material for a tube skirt.  

I once had a black tube skirt by American Apparel (actually I still probably have it in one of my many boxes of clothes in storage >.< ) but I find that that cotton tube skirt worked best in my 20's when I was a lot thinner.  Now that I work out less, it's harder for me to pull off that skirt.  So I'm really glad to have found Everlane's ponte tube skirt.  The ponte material is thick but stretchy so for the most part it won't accentuate every bump.  There is slight VPL if you're wearing thick underwear but for the most part it's not really noticeable.  And even though I'm not a huge fan of Everlane's choice of elastic waist for some of their bottoms, it works with this skirt (and it does make it super comfy).  I also like the length of this skirt on my 5'4" frame.  Plus for $55 this skirt isn't that ridiculously priced (like their pleated skirt for $88 or the ponte pants at $78), but then again it only cost them $17 to make it...

Oh, and a note on sizing: I ordered this in a medium since I didn't want it to be too tight (I'm usually size 4-6 on the bottom).  And for the pics above I paired it with my favorite (and only) Clare V shirt, Saint Laurent bag, and Everlane's modern oxfords.

Everlane Cotton Poplin Culotte Review

When I think of culottes, I think back to my awkward tween years when I had no sense of fashion (since I went to a school that had uniforms), and so my mom would buy my clothes for me.  And her style back then was all about culottes.  So I basically wore what she wore which meant culottes during the summer months when school was out or on weekends.  And it looked a lot like this:

Ever since those days I've had quite an aversion to culottes (even the word culottes makes me cringe).  But when Everlane came out with their modern take on the culotte for 2016, I thought it was at least worth trying (plus if it worked out, I thought it would be a great alternative to jeans in the summer.  I mean who wouldn't want to look stylish and feel like they're wearing PJs at the same time?).

So I gave it a shot.  But I forgot how much shorter I am than the models on Everlane's site:

Lol, they're almost long pants.  I'm not sure what you call this style but they look like harem pants without the tapering at the ankles.  The waistband on these pants are elastic which means they're comfortable but also looks more casual.  The poplin is crisp but wrinkles easily so again you'll be spending some time with your iron to make these look good.  Also the poplin is kind of thin so make sure you're wearing underwear that won't show VPL.  

Ah well at least I tried something new, but I think I'll be sticking to my shirt and jeans.

Everlane Cotton Poplin Square Shirt Dress (vs. Cuyana Poplin Shirt Dress)

Everlane seems to be really into the square style this summer with the release of their silk square shirt, their poplin square shirt and now their poplin square shirt dress.  I wasn't planning on trying out their poplin square shirt dress since I haven't been a fan of the square-style (to me, these square shirts just seem way too big to be flattering).  But when I decided to try out Cuyana's poplin shirt dress (which I reviewed this past Wednesday), I figured it would be good to see how Everlane's version of the poplin shirt dress compared.  And well...

meh, I didn't love it.

I think it's probably due to the fact that I have short legs and a pear-shaped body.  So the pleats and the extra wide material at the hips makes me look even more pear-shaped.  Also, if you get the white poplin, it's quite sheer.  I think if you have a more boyish figure, like the Everlane model, the dress could be super flattering.  I did like that this dress had pockets, unlike the Cuyana poplin shirt dress.  

Also, if you're wondering the poplin material of the Everlane dress is great but if you're looking for really high-quality poplin then the Cuyana shirt dress is a clear winner.  Cuyana's poplin (made in Turkey) is thicker, smoother and feels nicer than Everlane's.  But you're also looking at spending almost twice as much on the Cuyana dress than on the Everlane dress.
