I’m on a roll with The Row here with a review of a Row item every month so far. This month I’m going to talk about The Row Kitan coat I got from the Neiman Marcus sale at the end of 2023. I was actually a bit hesitant about this coat since it has a fairly pronounced hourglass figure, but I figured I could return it if I didn’t like it. And for the $950 price tag (originally retailed for $2450), I was too tempted to pass it up. But like all things from The Row that passes through my hands, I fell in love and ended up keeping it.
First off, I got this in a large since that was the only size left. I’m usually a 6/8 on top, a 8/10 on the bottom, and I’m 5’4”. And I would say that the coat is a good fit. It’s actually not too oversized, and the button closes comfortably even when I’m wearing a thin sweater underneath. I also love that even though I’m petite, that the coat doesn’t really overwhelm me (I guess MK and Ashley know how to dress petite women since they’re petite as well). The only thing is that the sleeves might be a tad long for me, but I can live with that.
As for the material, this coat is made of 54% viscose, 39% polyamide, 7% elastane with a 100% silk lining. Nowadays I don’t usually buy any clothing, new or used, with plastic fibers in it (in this case polyamide and elastane). But I made an exception for this coat because I know the plastic is to allow for the hourglass shape. Most natural fibers can’t keep a shape like that (unless it’s super expensive) and still be lightweight, so in this case they used plastic fibers. Since I don’t plan to wash this coat often, I won’t have to worry too much about microplastics being released with every wash. And even though this is a plastic-blend fabric, the coat feels really lux overall (probably because of the viscose and the silk lining). Also since this is a viscose coat, it’s not going to keep you super warm. But I find it’s been a great transitional piece from our mild Californian winter to spring.
I didn’t think I was going to be a fan of the hourglass shape because at first I thought it was kind of weird. And it is definitely more pronounced when you button the jacket close. But for the most part I wear it with the jacket open and I love the subtle little bump in the silhouette. It’s just so much more interesting than a plain black coat. And I guess that’s why The Row is The Row. They can make something quite plain, like a black coat, and make it feel lux and unique. I love that this coat goes with pretty much anything I wear and makes even the most plain outfits (secondhand jeans, babaa sweater, and birks in the pic above) something a tad more put-together.
Anyway since this is the only black coat I currently own, I plan to wear it to the ground. And as usual I will update my review with how it wears. And if you’re interested in any of my other reviews of The Row you can find them here.
