Now I’m no stranger to washable silk pillowcases. I first purchased and reviewed the original Slip silk pillowcase over two years ago and an Amazon dupe for the Slip silk pillowcase (tl;dr of the two reviews: I thought the Slip silk pillowcase was worth its $79 price tag (ok now I see it retails for $89) while the Amazon dupe, which sounded the same on paper, was not the same and I thought it was worth getting the original). If you want to see all the benefits of a silk pillowcase, refer to my review of the original Slip pillowcase (and I really do stand by those benefits). Oh and I should add that another benefit I didn’t mention in that review is that I think it helps keep my Augustinus Bader rich cream on my face rather than being absorbed into the pillow case.
Since that review I’ve consistently used the Slip pillowcase, which I even took to the hospital for Emi’s birth (and by the way I think taking your own pillow+pillowcase for any hospital stay is the best thing you can do to make an uncomfortable hospital bed a tad better). I use the Amazon dupe during the times the Slip pillowcase is in the wash or waiting to be washed. And tbh I sometimes forget which pillowcase I’m using by feel alone. I stand by my original review that the Slip pillowcase is better but after awhile you don’t really notice the difference between the two. I should note that I did not have the experience of the Amazon reviewers where the Amazon silk pillowcase came out extremely rough after washing, and I suspect that might be due to the fact that I only machine wash cold (on the delicate cycle) with all my silk items together inside a mesh bag with the Laundress delicate wash (as of 2023, do not buy Launderess detergents because they have some kind of bacterial issue).
Anyway this leads me to the Quince Mulberry Silk Beauty Pillowcase. Sorry to disappoint but this is not the original Slip silk pillowcase, even though both are 22 momme 100% mulberry silk (which I’ve learned is the highest quality silk there is, with one shiny smooth side and a rougher duller side—read more about it here). And if you want to know what momme means, take a read of one of my original blog posts about silk here. This Quince version is more like the Amazon dupe imo. Somehow the texture of the Slip pillowcase cannot be replicated. So if you really want just one good silk pillowcase, I think it’s still worth splurging on a $89 one (I’ve had mine for two years and it’s still going strong). But like I mentioned above, after awhile it doesn’t make that much of a difference.
I do however think that taking care of your pillowcase is the key. I highly recommend washing it with laundress delicate wash and with only silk garments only. Also I just learned that it’s even better if you wash these silk pillowcases inside out with it half zipped to further keep the smoothness of the silky side.
For $39, these silk pillowcases are a great value (and they have a promo where it’s $5 off per pillowcase if you purchase 2 or more—it shows up automatically in your cart). I actually purchased several of these to give as Christmas presents since I think they make a great stocking stuffer. And you can read all my other Quince reviews here.
